Opsgenie Sunset 2027: Migration Guide & Alternatives

Atlassian has officially announced that Opsgenie will be sunset in April 2027. This decision marks a significant shift in the incident management landscape, as thousands of engineering and operations teams rely on Opsgenie to handle on-call schedules, alert routing, and escalation policies.

As the deadline approaches, teams must evaluate their options: migrate to Atlassian's consolidated Jira Service Management (JSM) platform or switch to modern, lightweight alternatives.

In this migration guide, we break down what the sunset means, compare JSM against alternative approaches, and provide a step-by-step checklist to migrate your alert monitoring to Pingzo.

What Does the Opsgenie Sunset Mean?

After April 2027, the standalone Opsgenie service will cease operations. Key points to note:

  • The Atlassian Path: Atlassian is consolidating all incident operations into Jira Service Management (JSM). Basic on-call and alerting features are being integrated directly into JSM's plans.
  • No Standalone Option: You will no longer be able to subscribe to or renew Opsgenie as a separate tool.
  • Required Migration: Existing customers must manually or semi-automatically migrate their teams, rotation schedules, API keys, and routing rules to JSM before the deadline to prevent service disruption.

Jira Service Management vs. Lightweight Alternatives

While migrating to JSM is the default path, it is not the best fit for every team, especially startups and mid-market organizations.

ComplexityHigh (Requires full ITSM setup and Jira licensing)Low (Plug-and-play uptime & cron checks)

PricingHigh per-seat pricing modelsFlat-rate tiers with unlimited seats

Why Teams are Skipping JSM:

  1. The Jira Dependency: JSM is designed for large enterprises running complex IT service desks. If your team only needs reliable uptime alerts, SSL warnings, and cron heartbeats, JSM is massive overkill.
  2. Per-Seat Pricing: JSM licensing can become highly expensive for growing teams, as they charge per agent seat.
  3. No Native WhatsApp Alerts: JSM relies on standard SMS and push notifications. It lacks native integration with the WhatsApp Business API.

Checklist: Migrating Your Monitoring to Pingzo

If you want to migrate from Opsgenie to a simple, WhatsApp-native monitoring setup, follow these steps:

1. Audit Your Existing Monitors

Compile a list of all endpoints, synthetic pings, and cron heartbeat tokens currently configured in Opsgenie.

2. Configure HTTP and SSL Monitors in Pingzo

For every website or API endpoint:

  • Log in to Pingzo and click Create Monitor.
  • Enter your endpoint URL and set your desired ping frequency (e.g., 1 minute).
  • Enable SSL certificate validation.

3. Move Scheduled Cron Jobs

For background tasks, database backups, and scheduled scripts:

  • Create a Heartbeat Monitor in Pingzo to obtain a unique check-in URL.
  • Update your cron scripts (bash, Python, or Node.js) to trigger a curl request to Pingzo's check-in URL at the end of their execution.

4. Set Up WhatsApp & Telegram Alert Groups

Configure your team's notification preferences. Invite your team members (Pingzo paid plans include unlimited team seats) and verify their WhatsApp numbers to ensure alerts bypass noisy email filters.
